Théla works with discarded plastic carry bags & garbage bags, food packaging wrappers and large plastic sheets used in agriculture. The process is basically to convert the plastic into yarn (commonly known as ‘plarn’) before it is handcrafted.
We use two craft techniques – crochet and weaving. The crocheted products are made entirely by me in Greece and the woven products are made in collaboration with ethical, like-minded organizations in India.
From Discarded Plastic to Beautiful, Functional Products
Discarded plastic is collected from garbage bins, local markets, streets and waste collection points.
The washed plastic is hung or laid flat to dry.
They are then hand washed, thoroughly removing all the stains.
The clean plastic is cut by hand into yarn...
... and wound into balls.
The fabric is sewn into products under fair trade conditions.
The yarn is finally woven or crocheted into fabrics.
The final product is as sustainable as it gets - upcycled plastic fabrics in combination with locally sourced fittings and/or naturally dyed organic cotton.
